Mining is one of the world’s oldest industries and is the most economically important for many developing countries, as it is in South Africa. A wide range of economic, social, environmental and developmental challenges are presented by the mining industry, which need to be negotiated by government as well as communities living near mine sites. The costs and benefits of the mining and mineral resources industry therefore present infinite potential for insightful investigations and stories for journalists.
